Greifswald & Tomar: Joint student project on media consumption among young people

In the first semester of this academic year, a class from the University of Greifswald and a class from the Polytechnic University of Tomar (from the School of Technology in Abrantes), both in the field of media studies, developed a joint project on media consumption among young people in both countries: Germany and Portugal. In addition to their research, the 23 students also had the opportunity to meet online to discuss their findings.
Jasmin Buddensiek and Hália Costa Santos prepared the project together and presented it to the students, who had two tasks: to analyse the most important studies on media consumption by young people in each country and to keep a diary of their own media consumption for a week. The results were presented in an online session attended by all students. They discussed their perspectives in breakout rooms and shared their conclusions with the entire group at the end.
The project originated from a mobility measure involving two professors from the Polytechnic University of Tomar in Greifswald and developed into a specific academic activity with students. The aim of highlighting how students assess and reflect on their own media consumption led to interesting conclusions in connection with existing studies on the subject in both countries. Most relevant is the finding that young people spend many hours in front of the screen, but do so for different reasons: as research for their studies, to satisfy their personal intellectual curiosity, or for relaxation. Although these students live and study in two opposite parts of Europe, they concluded that they have many things in common.
