Greifswald and Tomar developed a student project about Media consumptions by youth

During the first semester of this academic year, one class of Greifswald University and one class of Polytechnic University of Tomar (from Higher School of Technology of Abrantes), both in the Media Studies field, developed a common project about the consumption of Media, through the screens, amongst young people of both countries: Germany and Portugal. Besides the research involved, the 23 students also had the opportunity to meet online to discuss their findings.
Jasmin Buddensiek and Hália Costa Santos prepared the project in cooperation and presented it to the students, who had two tasks: to analyse the main studies about Media consumption by youth in each country and to fill a diary of their own consumption of Media during one week. Each part was presented in an online session, with the participation of all the students, who discussed their perspectives in break-out rooms and, later, presented the conclusions to whole group.
This project started with a mobility action of two professors from Polytechnic University of Tomar at University of Greifswald and was developed into a specific academic activity with students. This challenge to find out how students 'look' at their consumption of Media and how they reflect about it, framed with the research done in both countries, resulted in very interesting conclusions. The main ones may be pointed out as the recognition that young people spend many hours using the screens, but they do it for different reasons: to look for information to their studies, to be informed and to relax. Although these students are living and studying in two opposite parts of Europe, they concluded that they have many things in common.
