Master's degree "Earth Sciences"

Geosciences (earth sciences) research the earth system on the basis of scientific methods. A broad spectrum of subjects is therefore integrated into the Master's degree course. The course is divided into 3 main subjects:

  1. Geology
  2. Georesources and the Environment
  3. Quaternary Sciences

In the focus area of classical geology, the specialisations are primarily geodynamics, paleoceanography, paleontology and sedimentology. In the fully English-language branch Georesources and the Environment, the main subjects are hydrogeology, economic geology, aquatic geochemistry, clay mineralogy and mathematical geology. And in the interdisciplinary branch area Quaternary Science, the focus is on quaternary geology, physical geography, quaternary paleontology and landscape ecology.

As the geosciences are highly interdisciplinary, there are a number of disciplines with high environmental relevance, such as applied geology, hydrogeology and aquatic geochemistry. The interdisciplinary knowledge and cross-disciplinary skills of geoscientists are particularly useful for studies on climate change.

The geosciences have a key role in the supply of raw materials and energy to our society. The search for resources such as drinking water, hydrocarbons, metals or bulk raw materials (gravel, clay, lime), but also for energy raw materials and geothermal energy is planned and realized by geoscientists. Geoscientists also play a decisive role in the search for suitable rock formations for the interim or final storage of raw materials and waste products.
