FAQ - Recognition of Examinations and Coursework / Placement in a Higher Subject Semester
on topics such as changing subject/university, formalities, studying abroad, etc.
The following information is of a general nature and does not replace students' obligations to cooperate, such as reading the relevant examination and study regulations.
How can I have examinations and/or coursework from my previous degree course or when changing subject recognised? Where can I find out what can be recognised?
If you have previously studied at another university or wish to enrol on a different (partial) degree course at the University, you must request credit transfer six weeks after the start of the lecture period of the semester in which you will begin your studies at the University of Greifswald, or commence studies in the new degree course. If you have completed the examination and/or coursework as part of a period of study abroad, credit transfer is possible at any time. However, the entitlement to recognition expires if you register for the exam that is to be replaced by the recognised examination and/or coursework.
The request must be submitted to the Central Examination Office together with the proof (Transcript of Records, Confirmation of Stay, assessment components, module descriptions etc.).
The respective examination board decides whether and to what extent a transfer of examinations and/or coursework is possible. The subject advisors provide the examination board with advice during the recognition procedure.
I would like to transfer from another university to the University of Greifswald. What do I have to do?
First of all, you should find out whether the degree course you are interested in studying here is subject to admission restrictions, possibly even to higher subject semesters. If so, do not forget your application. If not, you must request deregistration from your previous university before you can enrol. If you wish to enrol in the same or a related degree course, you should request the transfer of previous study achievements prior to enrolment if possible. Further information on the credit transfer procedure can be found under IV. Information on the application procedure and enrolment can be found on the Students' Registration Office's webpages.
I need a confirmation of placement in a higher subject semester/transfer of credit in order to enrol or change subject at the Students' Registration Office. Where can I get this?
You will receive the confirmation of placement in a higher subject semester from the Central Examination Office. However, this also happens automatically if you request the transfer of credits (see question 1).
Can I have internships or vocational training/employment/secondary employment that I completed prior to my studies recognised as an internship?
Depending on the degree course, this is possible. Here too, the subject advisors will be happy to help you. The decision is then made by the examination board at the request of the student. If the period of internship/employment is considered equivalent to the learning outcome, it may also be recognised as a module examination.
What happens if I have not yet received a grade for an examination and/or marked coursework, but need a grade for credit transfer?
The examination and/or marked coursework can still be recognised. In such circumstances, we record the study achievements as "recognised" which is later noted in the same form on the certificate.
What do I have to do if I want to study abroad?
The International Office (IO) provides information, e.g. on exchange programmes and logistics, but also contacts to partners all over the world. You can study at a partner university or find your own host for your period of study abroad or internship. At the IO, you can find funding options for your project and apply for scholarships. Take advantage of initial consultation sessions, subject-specific information events, country evenings and, above all, the International Day to plan and prepare your individual project abroad.
Further information is directly available from the International Office.
