Who can request disability compensation?
Students who are unable to take examinations and/or marked coursework (in whole or in part) in the intended form or only with special technical aids due to a prolonged or permanent physical disability or complaints or an existing pregnancy can submit a request for disability compensation. Disability compensation makes it possible, for example, to take examinations and/or marked coursework within a renewed writing-up period or to take equivalent examinations and/or marked coursework in a different form or with additional aids. This does not apply if this compensation contradicts the nature and content of the exam or is not suitable to compensate for the disabilities or complaints.
How and where is the request for disability compensation made?
Students who require disability compensation must submit a justified request in writing to the Central Examination Office. The request must be addressed to the chair of the examination board. It can also be submitted across semesters or for the entire degree programme. Suitable proof must be enclosed with the request. This is usually a doctor's certificate or a copy of the Schwerbehindertenausweis (proof that you are registered as disabled), provided that this shows the effects of the impairment on the ability to study/examine.
By when must the request for disability compensation be submitted?
The request for disability compensation must be submitted in good time, at the latest when registering for the respective exam, i.e. during the exam registration phase.
What happens after the application process?
The Central Examination Office forwards the request, provided it is in full, to the chair of the examination board for the degree course in question. They will decide on the request and the form of disability compensation to be granted. You will then receive notification of the decision in writing, which - depending on the type of disability compensation - you will present to the examiner before or during the exam. If the examination board rejects the request, the representative for the matters of disabled and chronic students will be consulted beforehand. You will also receive notification in writing in the event of a rejection.
