FAQs - Internship / Practical Study Period

on topics such as leave of absence, insurance, certificates, etc.

The following information is of a general nature and does not replace students' obligations to cooperate, such as reading the relevant examination and study regulations.

How can I take a leave of absence? Can I also take a leave of absence for a compulsory internship?

Students can be exempted from their studies for important reasons by submitting a request in writing to the Students' Registration Office. You must have re-registered (payment of the semester fee) before submitting your request. The leave of absence is generally only granted for the current or upcoming semester, but not for semesters in the past. You can find more detailed information under the following link [de].

A leave of absence for a compulsory internship is not possible.

My internship company requires proof that it is a compulsory internship. Can I get the certificate from the Central Examination Office?

If a compulsory internship is required in your Subject-Specific Examination Regulations, the Central Examination Office can confirm this in writing, e.g. for your internship search.

Am I insured during an internship?

The statutory accident insurance cover for students during internships depends on where the internship takes place. If it takes place outside the university, the accident insurance provider of the internship company is the insurer. After returning from the internship or during short-term stays at their study location (university), students are covered by statutory accident insurance via the University's statutory accident insurance provider.

Can I have internships or vocational training/employment/secondary employment that I completed prior to my studies recognised as an internship?

Depending on the degree course, this is possible. Here too, the subject advisors will be happy to help you. The decision is then made by the examination board at the request of the student. If the period of internship/employment is considered equivalent to the learning outcome, it may also be recognised as a module examination.
