Information about the University of Greifswald
The University was founded in 1456. Between 1933 and the beginning of 2018, it was known as the Ernst Moritz Arndt University. On 31 May 2018, it returned to its original name, the University of Greifswald.
The logo of the University of Greifswald

Due to the change of the University’s name, the official logo for the University had to be altered. The former namesake was removed from the logo and the claim ‘Wissen lockt. Seit 1456’ was placed beneath the name Universität Greifswald. The University Governance decided not to create an English version of the official logo, as this is not common practice at other German higher education institutions. The claim can be translated into English as 'The draw of knowledge. Since 1456' in official documents and the official English name of the University remains ‘University of Greifswald’.
Furthermore, the University’s seal, which is incorporated in the logo and was significantly simplified in 2006, has been replaced by a more detailed seal. This was produced in May 2018. An original brass stamp seal from 1896 was used as the template. This seal had been engraved according to a design created by Prof. Victor Schultze (Christian Art and Archaeology). Prof. Schultze based his design on the original seal of 1456.
If you are using an outdated logo on your website or in publications, please replace it with the current logo and please replace any outdated use of Ernst Moritz University of Greifswald with ‘University of Greifswald’. Please refrain from using the term EMAU, which was often used in the past.
We have provided the university logo here for your use. It may only be used in this form (copyright)! The logo may not be cropped or altered.
The logo is registered as a figurative mark with the German Patent and Trade Mark Office.

Information about the University of Greifswald
The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Germany and the Baltic Sea region. Founded in 1456, it is also the oldest Swedish university, as the region was ruled by the Swedish after the Thirty Years’ War and up until 1815.
Still today, the University maintains close ties with the universities of the Baltic Sea Region; and the Baltic Sea region is one of the University’s three research domains. But now the international relationships in both research and teaching have spread to regions and countries across the globe. The University today sustains international exchange relationships with more than 200 universities. International students and scholars come from more than 90 different countries.
