Approximately 26 percent (23 percent in 2017) of the new enrolments are students from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Roughly 38 percent of the new students come from former eastern Germany and slighlty more than seven percent from Berlin. A further 160 new students have a foreign nationality. With a total of 10,395 students, the total number of students has remained almost identical (10,433 in 2017). Around 790 of these students come from a total of 91 countries.

As in previous years, in addition to medicine and dentistry, the degree courses with admission restrictions - Psychology (bachelor's) with 31 applicants per study place and Human Biology (bachelor's) with 18 applicants per study place were particularly popular. There were seven applicants per study place for several teacher training degree courses with admission restrictions. Amongst the courses with no admission restrictions, Jurisprudence, the business administration degree courses and Political Science were highly sought after.

"We are delighted that the total number of students has stabilised and we were able to enrol more students than last year. This proves that our efforts to gain students for studying in Greifswald are paying off and spurs us on to continue our advertising for our University with good ideas and marketing measures," says Rector, Prof. Dr. Johanna Weber.

Prizes for outstanding teaching were also awarded at the Enrolment Ceremony. Students handed in their suggestions for the awards and a jury then selected the three prizewinners. Dr. Martha Kuhnhenn from the Department of Political Studies and Communication Studies and Prof. Dr. Karlhans Endlich from the Institute of Anatomy and Cell Biology received the teaching prize in the category "Integrative Lecture". The prize in the category "Career-Based Teaching" was awarded to Jo Zynda, an artistic member of staff in the field of applied art at the Caspar David Friedrich Institute. Dr. Mascha Hansen from the Department of British and North American Studies won the prize in the category "Sustainable Teaching", as her teaching lays specific emphasis on sustainability as an interdisciplinary cross-sectional issue of research and teaching.
