The funds are to be used for research and teaching projects that investigate the challenges for Europe at times that are dominated by insecurity and digitisation. Current issues that are being analysed include the effects of political insecurity within the European Union. Company data is arranged to define standards for measuring insecurity and then used to analyse the effects on the financial industry and real economy. The effects of the European Debt Crisis and Brexit are specific examples of current investigations.

The project also provides students at the University of Greifswald with the opportunity to take part in a free excursion to the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank in January 2020. ‘Of course I am delighted to have received this honour and am looking forward to realising the project over the next three years. I am very confident that our research and teaching projects will draw the students’ and general public’s attention to the current challenges faced by the European Union,’ says chair holder Prof. Dr. Joscha Beckmann.

Joscha Beckmann’s teaching at the University of Greifswald comprises introductory courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics, as well as important aspects of money and currencies. He has made numerous publications in the field of monetary and currency policy, as well as the empirics of international financial markets. Having studied Economics and Economic Education in Göttingen, Joscha Beckmann completed his doctorate on the topic of Essays on empirical exchange rate modeling and the cross-country importance of sentiment indicators at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He then did various periods of research in London, Glasgow and New York, and was an interim professor at the Universities of Passau, Freiburg and Bochum. Joscha Beckmann’s research activities focus on the empirical modelling of exchange rate dynamics and the analysis of international money and financial markets.
