The history of the Sveučilište u Zadru dates back to 1396. It was founded as a Dominican university at a time when Zadar was flourishing as the most important naval base of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Since then, the town on the Adriatic coast has had a highly diverse yet continuous tradition of higher education.
The University of Zadar in its current form was founded in 2002. Today it is the largest integrated university in the Republic of Croatia, with 25 departments and around 6000 students. Focal points include coastal and interdisciplinary marine research.

During the talks with the three Vice Rectors of the University of Zadar, the university representatives discussed possible fields of academic cooperation for establishing a partnership within the framework of the European Universities Initiative.

"The University of Zadar has a wide range of interesting research topics, including marine biotechnology, for example, which provide opportunities for research collaboration with Greifswald academics," said the Rector after the talks in Zadar.

The university partnership is the result of the efforts of the "Teaching Internationally" project to establish cooperation between the Baltic and Adriatic regions. Within the framework of the project, Erasmus contracts in the fields of educational science, German language and literature, British and North American studies and history were agreed. During the visit, discussions were also held with other departments to identify opportunities for cooperation and to intensify the exchange.

In winter semester 2023/2024, students from Greifswald will go to Zadar for the first time to study at the new partner university for one semester.
