Rescue Horizon Europe’s objective is to maintain Europe’s competitiveness in fundamental research. Around 1900 scientists, nine Nobel Laureates, several renowned European universities, scientific associations and 100 Members of the European Parliament have now expressed their support for the campaign.

In an open letter to Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and further members of the cabinet, the initiators demand an ambitious budget for supporting science, which in turn is a commitment toward the future potential of Europe.

Prof. Dr. Johanna Weber, Rector of the University of Greifswald, comments, ‘The German Rectors’ Conference has been fighting planned cuts to the funding of science and research for quite some time. The initiative of the two young female scientists deserves our support in particular, as their immense personal efforts have managed to gain a huge effect in such a short period of time. I hope they will also be able to convince the European Parliament!’

The protests of recent weeks have already succeeded in reducing the planned cuts to the EU’s research framework programme from 40 billion to only 36 billion euros.  The initiators and supporters of the campaign are now hoping that the European Parliament will further increase the budget. The final decision on the budget for Horizon Europe is planned for 10 December 2020.
