The history of the University of Zadar (Croatia) dates back to a studium generale that was introduced in 1396. Established as a faculty of the University of Zagreb in 1955 and affiliated to the University of Split in 1974, the University of Zadar was founded as an independent university in 2002. The university is split into 25 departments and mainly focusses on the humanities and social sciences (incl. teacher education), but also provides degree courses in the fields of management, healthcare, ecology, tourism, information technology, and marine engineering and logistics. In addition, the University of Zadar is a member of various other higher education projects, including the European University for Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability (EU CONEXUS).

Approximately 6,000 students are currently enrolled at the university. The university employs around 650 staff members.

The University of Zadar has been an international partner of the University of Greifswald since 2021, taking part in the DAAD-funded project Teaching Internationally [de]. ERASMUS partnerships currently exist with the Department of British and North American Studies, the Department of German Philology, and the Department of Educational Science. Further ERASMUS agreements are in the making.

‘By signing this Memorandum of Cooperation with the University of Zadar, the University of Greifswald has gained its first partner in southeast Europe. In addition to teacher education, the university provides several other interesting opportunities for collaboration in research and teaching,’ resumes the Manager of the Office of the Rectorate, Thomas Jenssen, who signed the collaboration contract for the University of Greifswald.
