Learn German in Greifswald

There are various options for improving your German language skills at the University of Greifswald. The following pages provide you with information about German language courses that are provided either prior to or during your studies, offers as part of winter and summer schools, and German tutorials. All of the courses are run by the Department of German Philology and the Department of Teaching German as a Foreign Language.

Preparatory German Language Courses

You require German language skills to be able to commence studies in Greifswald? We prepare you for the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH exam) by providing courses at intermediate (first semester) and advanced (second semester) levels. Greifswald Summer 07/08 – 01/09/2023

Spend your summer at the University of Greifswald, right next to the Baltic Sea coast! Greifswald Summer combines two weeks of intensive German lessons at various levels of proficiency and workshops with a diverse range of cultural events and virtual excursions. Improve your German and spend a fun and interesting time "in" Greifswald!

Intensive Course for Exchange Students

Students on exchange programmes (e.g. Erasmus and as part of university partnerships) can take part in the free, intensive preparatory courses at various levels (A2, B1 and C1), held two weeks prior to the start of the teaching period. You can register when you submit your online application.

German Language Courses During Studies

Are you already in Greifswald and would like to improve your German? International degree-seeking students, doctoral students and visiting academics can take part in the free German language courses provided during the semester. Register or find out more here.

German Tutorials Provided by the Department of German Philology

Students can take part in the German tutorials at B1 level during the lecture period. Here, you can improve your German language skills, learn more about the literature and culture of Germany, and receive support for mastering study assignments (e.g. writing coursework).

Language Tandems and SEAGULL

SEAGULL (Smart Educational Autonomy through Guided Language Learning) enables students to learn the native language of his/her language tandem partner. Partners can be found in a tandem database. The Foreign Languages and Media Centre (FMZ) will be pleased to help you out.
