Hiddensee Conference Centre

Remote branch of the University of Greifswald

The Hiddensee conference centre of the University of Greifswald is located on the west coast of the island of Hiddensee, in the district of Kloster. It was founded in 1930 as the ‘Biologische Forschungsanstalt Hiddensee’ [Biological Research Station Hiddensee] and was one of the first ecological research institutions in Germany.

Until a few years ago, the biological station was used for courses and excursions by the university. Now the building is primarily used as a conference centre by the University of Greifswald and other institutions. Guest researchers from Germany and abroad use the accommodation and work facilities at the Hiddensee site as well. International workshops are held regularly at the centre.

The Biological Station of Hiddensee is part of the working group “Experimental Plant Ecology” by Prof. Jürgen Kreyling (DFG Heisenberg-professorship) and is member of the German network of Biological Field Stations (Netzwerk der Biologischen Stationen Deutschlands). The working groups own research focuses on ecological topics, mainly aquatic ecology and the ecology of coastal dunes.
