Assessment of Examinations and Coursework

Evaluation Deadlines

The following deadlines for marking examinations and/or coursework, including their electronic recording in the self-service portal, came into force with the amendment of the RPO in winter semester 2021/2022:

Type of examination/assessed courseworkMarking deadline (max.) Reference RPO
Oral examinations 1 week § 19
Written examinations 4 weeks § 20
Timed online open-book examinations 4 weeks § 20a
Coursework essays 6 weeks § 21
Other examinations/assessed coursework 6 weeks § 22
Dissertations 4 weeks (not recorded online) §§ 27-30

* In addition to the regular awarding of grades or marks, the assessment of an examination also includes the recording of special circumstances in the examination process. Statuses to be recorded separately are

  • Did not show up / did not submit (NE)
  • Did not show up / did not submit an unassessed examination/piece of coursework (NEU)
  • Cheating (TA)

These special tyoes of failed examinations/assessed coursework can have special consequences pursuant to examination law and must therefore always be indicated.

In future, a distinction must be made between serious and less serious cases of attempted cheating. The examination may be repeated either once or twice, depending on the kind of cheating. Whether it is a serious or ‘only’ less serious case of attempted cheating is to be determined initially by the examiner. The Central Examination Office will convene with the examination boards to compose a list of examples for orientation.

Please refer to the information on the procedure and step-by-step instructions on the page Recording of Examination Results.

Examination corrections with AI

It is currently difficult to say whether it is legally admissible to use AI to correct exams, as some basic requirements for assessment procedures must be ensured. The basic prerequisites for this are the personal and professional qualifications of the examiners, their personal responsibility and independence in the assessment of the respective examination and the AI's ability to treat the examinee objectively, fairly and impartially (Fischer/Jeremias/Dieterich, Prüfungsrecht, 8. ed., Rn. 526).
