The goal is to develop a teacher-training degree programme in Greifswald in which internationality and mobility are among the criteria that define the quality of studies, teaching, and research, forming an integral part of the curriculum. The project “Teaching Internationally” provides new resources, for example, for enabling multidisciplinary collaborations with partners and establishing a joint international teacher-training degree programme. One focus will be placed on scholarships for students who are planning to study or do internships abroad. Additionally, guest lectureships are intended to encourage lively exchange between partners. The implementation of the model is starting with partner universities in Finland, Latvia, Russia, and the USA; gradually expanding to universities in Vietnam, Great Britain, and Poland.

“Student mobility and the exchange of teaching staff play a central role in internationalisation. These two aspects form the core of the programme Teaching Internationally. It intends to strengthen the contact with existing partner universities and help establish new partnerships. The programme thus provides incentives for increasing the internationality of research and teaching,” says Prof. Dr. Katharina Riedel, Pro-Rector for Research and International Affairs.

“Especially in teacher-training degree programmes, student mobility is comparatively low. Studies show that those who spend some time living abroad benefit from this in their personal development, for example, in terms of increased open-mindedness and emotional stability. Those who can successfully integrate into another culture find it easier to adapt to new situations and master challenges – important skills, especially for the teaching profession,” explains Lena Stippl, who is responsible for the internationalisation of the teacher-training degree programmes/bilingual education. The director of the Department of Educational Science, Prof. Dr. Kathrin Mahlau explains: “Considering the increasingly diverse educational backgrounds and origins of pupils in Germany, international and intercultural knowledge and experience are of central importance for teachers. There is a great need for action.”

With the programme “Lehramt.International”, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports the development of institutionalised international university collaboration as well as the long-term increase in the international mobility of teachers and students in order to strengthen the international focus of teacher training at German higher education institutions in the long run.
