Graduate Funding for Doctoral scholarships for Summer Semester 2024 (EXPIRED)

Every semester, the University of Greifswald awards scholarships, subject to the availability of funds, to particularly highly-qualified junior academics, preparing to do their doctorates, and in accordance with the Landesgraduiertenförderungsgesetzes (Act on State Graduate Funding) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Five new scholarships are expected to be available for summer semester 2024 (subject to budgetary regulations).

There is no legal right to the receipt of funding. 

The basic scholarship amounts to 1,500.00 euros. If students fulfil the corresponding requirements, they may receive a family supplement of 150.00 euros for the first child and 100.00 euros for every other child.

Application Deadline for Summer Semester 2024

The application documents for initial applications should be submitted in both written (one copy) and digital (PDF) form by 03 February 2024 to:

Information for Applicants

Please make sure to take note of the following information concerning your application. 

1. Required Documents

The following documents must be submitted in both written and electronic (PDF) form (one copy each):

  • Application form
  • Tabular curriculum vitae CV (résumé)
  • Legally attested copy of university certificate
  • If applicable, list of marks or proof of other academic achievements
  • Description of project/concept
  • Supervisor’s (professor's) assessment of the fulflment of the funding requirements according to § 2(1) and 2 LGFG, see also no. 5 of the guidelines
  • Second assessment from a further member of professorial staff (professor or Privatdozent) that corresponds to the evaluation of first assessment
  • Confirmation of supervision by the member of the university community authorised to supervise the doctoral project (Supervision Agreement)
  • Confirmation of acceptance as a doctoral candidate (f there is no supervision agreement, the acceptance as a doctoral candidate must be signed by both supervisors)
  • Proof of enrolment as a doctoral student
  • If applicable, birth certificates of children and request form for family supplement

The doctoral project must be planned in such a way that, if it proceeds according to plan, it can be successfully completed within the standard funding period of three years. At the latest by the halfway point of the standard funding period, it must be determined whether the conditions or requirements associated with the grant have been met and whether the scholarship can continue to be paid until the end of the grant period.

2. Requirements for Allocation of a Scholarship

Requirements for the Allocation of a Scholarship are e.g. :

  • Successfully completed university degree with well above-average marks that qualifies the student for commencing doctoral studies
  • Acceptance as a doctoral candidate at the relevant faculty and academic supervision from two professors at the University of Greifswald, or one of the higher education institutions belonging to the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and enrolment as a doctoral student at the University of Greifswald.
  • The planned research project must be expected to make an important contribution to research or contribution to the improvement of the industrial competitiveness of the State.
3. Exclusion from Funding

Funding is not possible, if the applicant or prospective recipient of the scholarship

  • has already obtained a doctorate,
  • has already received funding for the same project,
  • already receives or has already received funding for another doctoral project,
  • is currently completing a vocational course or on a traineeship, that is not going to be interrupted,
  • is currently employed, unless it is a job that is compatible with the funding and has a very limited workload (at the university: 10 hours/week, outside the university: 5 hours/week).
4. Request for Extension

If you request an extension of the scholarship, a work report must be presented to the Awarding Committee by the 03 February 2024, which gives details of the work achieved and time needed for the work so far and a work and time plan for addressing problems that have not yet been solved; as well as a statement from the supervisor, which evaluates the scholarship recipient’s achievements up to now and assesses the likelihood of completion within the regular funding period. Please note:

Extensions of funding will not be permitted without presentation of a work report. The grant certificate makes reference to the corresponding legal regulations.
