Creating Partnerships
The International Office is glad to help you with any topic related to contract management. It provides you with all the essential information and any required support.
Erasmus+ with Programme Countries
The Erasmus+ Programme makes it possible for students, lecturers and employees to spend time abroad in Europe. The Inter-Institutional Agreements provide the foundation for such opportunities.
The application is submitted by the subject coordinator in collaboration with the International Office, following previous agreement with regard to the types of mobility (for study and/or guest lectureship purposes) and the number of places.
The contracts usually cover a seven-year period (for the current 2021-2027 programme generation) and can be renewed for the next generation, which will start in 2027, if agreed to by the partner university and the department (subject coordinator).
In addition to information on language requirements and application deadlines, contracts contain information on visas, accommodation and insurance, as well as links to course catalogues.
There are currently around 280 Erasmus contracts between the University of Greifswald and 176 European universities
Erasmus+ with Partner Countries
The University of Greifswald has taken part in the EU Mobility Programme Erasmus+ with Partner Countries (worldwide) since 2015. In the current funding period (2020 to 2023), funding has been attained for exchange with Vietnam, Russia and Ukraine.
In order to be able to realise projects, the University of Greifswald (International Office in cooperation with the relevant departments) must obtain funding from the European Commission. Once the applications have been approved, contracts can be drawn up with the corresponding partners. These are similar to the usual Erasmus+ contracts. The only difference is that the duration is only valid for the period for which funds have been approved and the number of approved mobility places (and types of mobility (study, guest lectureships, STT and SMP)
The University of Greifswald currently holds contracts with twelve non-European countries.

University Partnerships
Contractual partnerships with universities in Europe and around the world form the basis for the successful internationalisation of research and teaching at the University of Greifswald.
University contracts are usually concluded for 3-5 years as a Memorandum of Understanding and are then transformed into a permanent Agreement. If the partnership also entails the exchange of students, the details are defined in an addendum to the MoU.
Faculty contracts and departmental contracts regulate cooperation within a subject area or for several disciplines belonging to one faculty. They can also be used to prepare a university partnership.
Letters of intent are often required when applying for international projects/funding. They are also used to prepare new partnerships.
Criteria for new partnerships
The creation of new university partnerships must match the plans for developing the University of Greifswald’s (UG) teaching and research profile, in particular its key fields of research. New collaborations in teaching and research make a lasting contribution to the international visibility of the University of Greifswald.
University partnerships involve at least two faculties at UG and open up important funding opportunities for both partners. The evaluation of existing partnership agreements is also based on these criteria.
Contracts should always be concluded in English and must always be signed by the Rector if UG is named as a contractual partner in the contract. Detailed criteria for new partnerships [de] as well as the procedure for setting up contracts [de] can be found here.
