FAQ
- The DAAD language certificate, UNICERT certificates as well as TOEFL and IELTS certificates that are not older than 2 years at the time of application are accepted as proof of language proficiency. A Cambridge Certificate is valid for life and is also accepted. Results of UNICERT examinations can be transferred to the DAAD language certificate after consultation with the Language Center.
- Proof is not sufficient: High school diploma with English grade, expired certificates, intermediate grade from language studies.
- Speakers of the national language or language of instruction as their first language are exempt from submitting a language certificate.
- DAAD language certificate: The Language Center of the University of Greifswald conducts the DAAD test to determine language proficiency several times a semester. All information on registration, costs and the content of the test can be found on the Language Center website. Students of English/American Studies, Russian and Law should contact their department directly to take the test there.
- A TOEFL certificate is required for participation in graduate courses in North America.
The content of your plans abroad, the reasons for your choice of institution, the highlighting of suitable study programs, the integration of your stay abroad into your study plans and your professional goals will be evaluated. The reference to existing contacts, the choice of certain professors or supervisors at the host institutions, etc. will also be evaluated. Please also consider how you represent the University of Greifswald as an exchange student.
You can use our guidelines for orientation.
The expert opinion can be issued by university lecturers.
There is a template for the review (see Documents to be submitted: Letter of recommendation). Reviewers can contact the International Office directly if they have any questions about the content of the review.
In consultation with the International Office, reviewers from other universities can also prepare the review if, for example, you are in the first semester of a Master's degree program and you would like to ask a lecturer from your Bachelor's degree program to write the review.
If you have not yet received confirmation from the host institution or the duration of your stay has not yet been finalized, submit documentation of the status of your stay, for example in the form of an email from the host institution. You must submit the actual confirmation by the start of the scholarship.
Please submit the application preferably in German. This also applies to the expert opinion. Applications can also be submitted in English, for example if your native language or that of the person preparing the report is not German.
The University of Greifswald awards PROMOS scholarships for projects up to a maximum of four months. The actual duration of your stay abroad may be longer. PROMOS funding for individual projects consists of a lump sum for travel expenses or monthly lump sums, depending on which total amount is higher. The amount of funding depends on the DAAD scholarship rates. The travel allowance is paid once at the beginning of the stay. The lump sums for the stay are paid monthly.
The funding period is calculated on the basis of the information provided by your host institution in the acceptance letter. Travel days are not funded. For study visits, the duration of the study period (incl. orientation week and examination period) is relevant, but not the entire semester period.
Paid work, e.g. in an internship, may be carried out with the approval of the University of Greifswald if the purpose of the stay abroad is not jeopardized.
The Deutschlandstipendium and PROMOS can be received simultaneously without restriction.
Simultaneous funding with BAföG abroad is generally possible. PROMOS funding must be reported to the office responsible for BAföG abroad.
PROMOS funding is not possible if your stay abroad is already supported by German public funds. This applies, for example, to funding from Erasmus+ and foundations (e.g. Heinrich Böll Foundation, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Friedrich Ebert Foundation, etc.).
PROMOS funding must be reported to other scholarship providers.
It is generally possible to apply for different programs for the stay abroad at the same time. However, you must rule out double funding for the project abroad (see above).
If you have completed your stay abroad at the time of application, you can no longer apply for the PROMOS scholarship.
After the selection committee has reviewed the applications and made the selection, you will usually receive written notification by e-mail up to six weeks after the application deadline.
PROMOS scholarship holders within a period of study (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.) can be funded for a total of six months for study and internship stays. You can combine funding for different projects and apply multiple times. In a new stage of your education, you can receive a further six months of funding via PROMOS.
There are no restrictions on participation in specialist and language courses or competitive trips.
No. You must be enrolled at the University of Greifswald to be eligible for the PROMOS scholarship. If you de-register, we will have to reclaim the funding. Instead, please consider the possibility of taking a leave of absence during your stay abroad.
At the end of your stay, you must submit an experience report and a Confirmation of Stay from the host institution (see Documents to be submitted: Final documents).
Students whose current life and study situation is affected by challenging circumstances can apply for compensation for disadvantages, which will be taken into account in the application process. Challenging circumstances can be, for example, chronic illness, refugee background (e.g. refugee/child of refugee with German citizenship), pregnancy and/or student with child(ren) or caring for relatives. Please see the document "Honorary declaration on compensation for disadvantages" under Documents to be submitted.
For PROMOS scholarship holders with a degree of disability (GdB) or with a chronic illness of at least 50, special needs of up to 10,000 euros can be registered if the additional expenses are related to the stay abroad (costs are exclusively in connection with the stay abroad) and other institutions do not provide financial support. When applying, the relevant information must be provided in the application form; the application will be submitted by the International Office after successful selection as a scholarship holder.
If you start at the beginning of July, for example, you may not yet have received any feedback. If the decision is positive, retroactive funding for the entire stay is possible without any problems.
No, you do not have to. If you take a leave of absence for your stay, you will not be able to take any examinations during the semesters on leave. If you take a leave of absence, your semesters will not increase during the period of leave.
Internships can also be funded in the period between the Bachelor's degree and the start of the Master's program. Pre-admission for the Master's degree or a similar document from a German university must be available. You must still be enrolled at the University of Geifswald at the time of application.
"Now I just needed money. I did some research and everything seemed to fall into place. However, I applied for BAföG abroad three months in advance instead of the recommended six months, so the much-anticipated approval of almost €10,000 only arrived a few days after my last exam. Together with another €1000 or so from the PROMOS scholarship, I was able to cover almost all the costs."
