The New Logo for the University of Greifswald

[Translate to English:] Logo der Universität Greifswald

Due to the change of the University’s name, the official logo for the University had to be altered and the seal has been adjusted. The former namesake has been removed from the logo and the claim ‘Wissen lockt. Seit 1456’ has been placed under the name Universität Greifswald. A decision was made by the University Governance that there will not be an English version of the official logo, as this is not common practice at other institutions of higher education. The claim can be translated into English as 'The draw of knowledge. Since 1456' in official documents and the official English name of the University will remain University of Greifswald.

Furthermore, the University’s seal, which is integrated into the logo and was strongly simplified in 2006, has been replaced by a more detailed seal. This was produced in May 2018. An original brass seal from 1896 was used as the template. This seal had been engraved according to a design created by Prof. Victor Schultze (Christian Art and Archaeology). Prof. Schultze had based his design on the original seal of 1456.

If you use our logo on your website, we would ask you to replace it by the 1st June 2018 with the current logo and if you were using the old German name of the University (Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald), please replace it with Universität Greifswald or, for English websites, simply University of Greifswald. We also ask you to only use the University’s new logo and the new name for any publications mentioning the University.

You can use the University logo that can be found below. It can only be used in this form.

Information about the University of Greifswald

The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Germany and the Baltic Sea Region. Founded in 1456, it is also the oldest Swedish university, as the region was ruled by the Swedes after the Thirty Years’ War and up until 1815.

Still today, the University is closely tied to the universities of the Baltic Sea Region; and the Cultures of the Baltic Sea Region are among the University’s key fields of research. But now the international relationships in both research and teaching have spread to regions and countries across the globe. Today, the University sustains international exchange relationships to more than 200 universities. There are currently international students and scholars from more than 90 different countries.
