Degree Course Outline

The international master’s degree course ‘Infection Biology and Immunology’ is aimed at graduates of bachelor’s degree courses in areas related to biological sciences, such as biology, biochemistry, human biology or degree courses with related contents. The students should have sound knowledge of biological disciplines such as biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and molecular medicine.

During their studies for the master’s degree course, students will consolidate their knowledge of biomedical laboratory methods used in infection biology, immunology, modern OMICs technologies, as well as the theory and practice of clinical research. To this end, students first attend core modules that convey the fundamental principles of infection biology and immunology, basic knowledge of OMICs technologies, data science, as well as key competences. Based on the core modules, students can make an individual selection of compulsory elective advanced modules. The range of advanced modules should provide an appropriate scope of content to enable students to specialise in the various subject disciplines of infection biology and immunology linked to biomedical or clinical practice and realise their own interests. By attending these courses, students acquire methodological knowledge and competences and can transfer principles of infection biology, immunology and biomedicine to specific problems.

The research practical introduces students to current research topics in preparation for independent scientific work and during the work placement, students gain insights into possible areas of future work and job profiles. The master’s degree course ‘Infection Biology and Immunology’ is completed after passing the master’s dissertation module.

The programme’s research orientation and emphasis on independence prepares students for work in scientific fields. Having gained the degree of Master of Science, graduates have access to managerial positions on the international job market or also positions in the public service sector. Positions with high levels of responsibility will be available in higher education, at research institutes, authorities and in the industrial sector, such as the pharmaceutical industry, in clinical laboratories or medical technology. Furthermore, graduates are able to commence a doctorate and thus pursue a scientific career in research inside or outside of higher education.

Course Structure

Studies for an M.Sc. in ‘Infection Biology and Immunology’ commence in winter semester. During the degree course, students gain practical and theoretical knowledge of infection biology, immunology, modern OMICs technologies and clinical research. At the beginning of their studies, all students visit core modules, which aim to consolidate basic knowledge of infection biology and immunology. Furthermore, they are taught the fundamental principles of OMICs technologies, data science and key competences.  Based on these introductory modules, students individually select compulsory elective modules. They can choose from 13 advanced modules. The range of advanced modules should provide an appropriate scope of content to enable students to specialise in the various subject disciplines of infection biology and immunology linked to biomedical or clinical practice and realise their own interests. The students acquire both theoretical and methodological knowledge and competences and will be in a position to transfer principles of infection biology, immunology and biomedicine to specific problems.

  • High resolution modern imaging procedures (e.g. fluorescence microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), super resolution microscopy, electron microscopy, real-time bioimaging of infections in infection models using IVIS Spectrum)

Greifswald as a Study Location

Projects in the field of infection biology and immunology, including clinical and patient-oriented questions, constitute a key field of research at the University and University Medicine Greifswald. The combination of university facilities and external research institutions such as the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut - Federal Research Institute for Animal Health - and the Helmholtz Institute for One Health (founded in 2022), provides Greifswald with an infrastructure unique to Germany in the field of infection biology and immunology of humans and animals in viral, bacterial or parasitic infections. The excellent infrastructure provided by the research institutions with laboratories up to biosafety level 3 and 4, as well as state-of-the-art technological equipment in the field of proteogenomics and high resolution microscopy enable teaching and research at a high and internationally competitive level.

The master’s degree course ‘Infection Biology and Immunology’ is aimed at graduates of bachelor’s degree courses in areas such as biology, biochemistry, human biology or degree courses with similar contents that provide sound training in biological sub-disciplines such as biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and molecular medicine.

Language Skills
Proven proficiency in English at a level of at least B2 of the ‘Common European Framework of Reference for Languages’ (equivalents: FCE, IELTS 5.0, TOEFL (PBT) 567, TOEFL (CBT) 227, TOEFL (IBT) 80, TOEIC 785) or alternatively, proof of at least seven years of English lessons at school.

Degree course ‘Infection Biology and Immunology’

The master's degree course aims to educate graduates so that they can independently identify and structure questions in research and/or practice and answer them by selecting and applying suitable scientific methods. These goals are achieved with an educational programme directly related to research that also has significant practical components.

After commencing studies in winter semester, students first gain basic knowledge of infection biology and immunology and are introduced to OMICs technologies and Data Science. These modules are complemented by key competences such as bioethics and laboratory animal science.

Based on this foundation, students have a free choice of advanced modules and are able to specialise in areas that reflect their strengths and that they are interested in. During their studies, students receive an extensive/multifaceted methodological education that includes advanced biomedical laboratory methods in infection biology, immunology and modern OMICs technology, as well as clinical research.

Students learn how to use their knowledge to solve problems and to critically reflect on and analyse complex matters. By attending these courses, students acquire practical and theoretical competences and are able to transfer principles of infection biology, immunology and biomedicine to specific problems.
