New Chairperson of the Senate and First Ever Online Session of the Senate

The University of Greifswald’s new Senate, which was elected at the beginning of the year, convened for its inaugural session on 15 April 2020. Due to the contact restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic, the session was held online with online voting for the first time in the Senate’s history. The postal votes to determine the Chairperson of the Senate were counted last week. Prof. Dr. Uwe Bornscheuer was elected new Chairperson of the Senate.

Prof. Dr. Uwe Bornscheuer is Chair of Biotechnology and Enzyme Catalysis at the Institute of Biochemistry. He has been at the University of Greifswald since 1999 and since then has played various roles in university bodies.

At the beginning of the session, he thanked the ceding Chairperson of the Senate, Prof. Dr. Maria-Theresia Schafmeister. She had been the leader of the Senate since September 2008. As the new Senate’s inaugural session took place online, there was only digital applause for her achievements using the chat function of the conference tool. A real bouquet of flowers will follow as soon as the contact restrictions have been relaxed.
