DAAD Eastern Partnerships
The University of Greifswald's international focus includes cooperation with partner universities in Central, Eastern, and South-Eastern Europe.
The Eastern Partnership Programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) strengthens and promotes partnerships between German universities and universities in Central Eastern Europe, Eastern Europe and South Eastern Europe as well as the countries of the South Caucasus and Central Asia. The DAAD has been funding the University of Greifswald’s “Eastern partnerships” by covering travel expenses and accommodation costs since the 1990s. The DAAD assumes that both partner universities will jointly participate in the funding.
Partner Universities
- University of Zadar (ZU) Zadar, Croatia
- Masaryk University (MU) Brno, Czechia
- Adam Mickiewicz University (UAM) Poznan, Poland
- University of Szczecin (US) Szczecin, Poland
- Vilnius University (UV) Vilnius, Lithuania
- University of Latvia (UL) Riga, Latvia
- University of Tartu (UT)/ Tartu, Estonia
- Yerevan State University (YSU) Jerewan, Armenia
Since there have been no active partnerships with universities in the Russian Federation since 2022, new partner universities in Croatia and Armenia have been acquired.
Financial Support
The University of Greifswald provides funding via the programme in accordance with DAAD guidelines:
1. Travel allowances for stays at partner institutions
Greifswald researchers and staff can apply for the actual amount of travel expenses; Greifswald students and PhD students can apply for country-specific travel allowances. The DAAD does not fund accommodation costs and daily allowances.
For visitors from Greifswald, some partner universities may offer free/reasonably priced accommodation, e.g. in guest houses.
2. Short scholarships for stays in Greifswald
Visiting researchers, doctoral candidates and students from the partner universities can apply for daily allowances/short-term scholarships in the following amounts.
Travel expenses of guests from abroad should be borne by the home university.
| daily allowance per day | short scholarship | months maximum | |
|---|---|---|---|
| academics/employees | max. 89 EUR | max. 2.000 EUR | 1 month |
| PhD students | max. 58 EUR | max. 1.300 EUR | 3 months |
| students/graduates | max. 45 EUR | max. 992 EUR | 6 months |
Procedure and Application
Academics and employees from Greifswald can submit applications digitally via the IO portal for scientists and employees [de] by the following deadlines:
- November 15 for projects starting from January of the following year
- May 15 for projects starting from August of the current year
The Guests from the partner universities first discuss their stays with researchers at the University of Greifswald. After being nominated by the international offices of their home universities, they apply for the exchange via the University of Greifswald's IO portal.
"For many years, I have been using the DAAD Eastern Partnerships in my teaching to support a project that I organise together with the University of Latvia in Riga. The funding helps us greatly to finance our excursion to Riga and to support the visit of Latvian students here in Greifswald. The Eastern Partnerships are a great, very unbureaucratic tool that I really enjoy using in my teaching, and I hope that we will continue to have access to them for a long time to come." (Stefan Ewert, democracy project with the University of Latvia, Riga, funded by DAAD Eastern Partnerships)
In our Podcast[de] and on the Greifswald goes International[de] blog, outgoing students and staff report on their experiences abroad.
