Intercultural Communication in Multicultural Online Classrooms

Would you like to develop your digital intercultural communication skills? Regardless of the digital teaching format—synchronous or asynchronous—we will explore the key aspects that need to be considered during the teaching process.

In the introductory section, we will address the fundamental principles of instructional communication, focusing on its specific characteristics within the online educational environment. We will next focus on the intercultural barriers encountered in digital pedagogy and apply these concepts to forms of communication and situations arising in multicultural classrooms. In the second part of the workshop, we will analyze concrete situations of intercultural misunderstandings and seek solutions for preventing and resolving them.

The workshop is intended for instructors interested in the intercultural challenges they may face when teaching a multicultural class. It is part of the training programme offered via the KreativEU Centre for Excellence in Digital Education and AI. 

Contents:

  • Fundamental principles of didactic communication; didactic communication in the virtual educational space
  • Overview of intercultural barriers that may arise in the virtual educational space
  • Practical applications of different forms of communication: real-life situations from multicultural virtual classrooms
  • Best practices for instructors and group discussion

Objectives:

  • You will become familiar with the principles of instructional communication, as applied in the virtual educational environment.
  • You will understand the intercultural barriers that can arise when teaching in the virtual space.
  • You will become familiar with different forms of instructional communication and the challenges that arise in multicultural virtual learning environments.
  • You will be able to develop strategies for preventing and managing intercultural communication barriers.
