The aim of the lecture is to provide participants with insights into the diversity of encounter-based approaches that can be implemented in school and higher education contexts. The lecture discusses relevant types and objectives of encounter projects, as well as the didactic and methodological principles underlying their design and implementation, with a particular focus on their potential to foster students’ competence in cultural reflection.
Particular attention is given to key quantitative and qualitative findings concerning the contribution of international project seminars to the development of language- and culture-reflective learning among pre-service teachers from Germany, Poland, and the Netherlands. These findings are drawn from the GIP project, conducted over a period of more than four years.
The lecture then offers practical suggestions for the preparation, implementation, evaluation, and reflection of participants’ own encounter programmes. Special emphasis is placed on the transfer of research findings into educational practice: What concrete benefits can pre-service teachers derive from these findings? How can they design and develop their own project formats? Overall, the lecture is practice-oriented, research-based, and directly relevant to the transition from teacher education to professional practice.
