On November 26, 2025, Dr. Benjamin Wild will give a lecture as part of the Late Lunch Seminars on "Rethinking Healthcare Data Interoperability in the Age of Large Language Models".
Electronic Health Records (EHRs) offer vast potential for clinical prediction, but their use is challenged by data interoperability issues across healthcare systems. While specialized EHR foundation models exist, their development is constrained by limited access to diverse datasets, which compromises their generalizability. Dr. Wild’s presentation introduces an alternative approach: using general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs) to encode EHR data. By serializing structured patient records into plain text, LLMs can be applied to generate powerful representations without needing access to private medical training data. He will demonstrate that this method matches or surpasses the performance of specialized EHR models, showing strong generalization capabilities across different patient cohorts. The work of Dr. Wild’s group highlights LLMs as a scalable alternative for clinical prediction, prompting a re-evaluation of traditional approaches to healthcare data interoperability.
The Late Lunch Seminars, the Medical Faculty’s scientific lecture series, aim to promote networking across a wide range of research topics. The talks include presentations from local scientists and external project partners, as well as inaugural lectures by newly appointed professors. The lectures are primarily aimed at the scientific staff of University Medicine, the University and non-university research institutions in Greifswald.
The talk is open to the university public and will be held in English. Registration is not required.
