Applied regression modelling in epidemiological research

This course introduces the theory and application of regression analysis, focusing on the linear model for continuous outcomes, logistic models for categorical outcomes, models for count responses, and the Cox model for censored survival times.

The rationale for the use of regression models in non-experimental, observational data will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be placed on
• interpretation of parameter estimates,
• selection of covariables,
• assessment of non-linearity,
• confounding,
• interaction,
• predictive accuracy.

A brief outline to regression analyses of complex surveys, correlated and longitudinal data, and handling of missing data will be given if preferred by the audience.

The course will also include a 2-hour consulting and discussion session on the first two days. This will give the participants the opportunity to discuss own datasets and practical issues with the lecturers.

Focus audience: natural scientists and physicians working in the field of cardiovascular clinical-epidemiological research.

Prerequisites: Prior attendance of a basic statistics course or fundamental knowledge in basic inference statistics (descriptive statistics, bivariate statistics [e.g. 2 group mean comparisons, k group mean comparisons for continuous outcomes, correlation analysis, contingency/cross table analysis for binary outcomes])
