The Politics of Age: Youth Political Representation in Comparative Perspective:

In most countries, the average politician is much older than the average citizen and there are repeated reports of young people complaining that their interests are not adequately represented in politics. This talk gives a comparative overview of how young people are politically represented around the globe and why their representation matters to the resilience of representative democratic systems.

Kira Renée Kurz is a postdoctoral researcher in the IRTG “Baltic Peripeties” at the University of Greifswald, where she studies the perception of political representation in times of demographic change. She completed her doctoral studies at the universities of Freiburg and Strasbourg with a dissertation on how parties in Germany and France deal with age-based and generational conflicts. Her research has been published in outlets such as European Political Science, Politics & Governance, or Politics & Internet. The talk is partly based on her forthcoming edited volume, “Youth Political Representation – A Global Perspective on Young Adults’ Presence in Political Institutions” (Palgrave Macmillan, 2026).
